The Bund 外滩
The Bund is Shanghai's iconic waterfront promenade. As you walk along the Bund you’ll see the colonial-era buildings on one side and the futuristic Pudong skyline on the other. The contrast between old and new Shanghai is most striking here, especially when illuminated at night. Bring good walking shoes, and be prepared for big crowds!
Nanjing Road 南京路
Nanjing road is Shanghai's premier shopping destination, stretching about 5 kilometres from the Bund to Jing'an Temple. The East section offers a mix of international brands and local stores, while the West section has upscale shopping centres and luxury brands. Walking around the side and back streets, you’ll find great street food and restaurants. Nanjing Road is busiest in the evenings and weekends. If your legs need a rest, head to Captain Bar for amazing rooftop views of Shanghai’s skyline.
Yu Garden 豫园
Yuyuan (Yu) Garden is a beautiful Chinese garden located beside the City God Temple in the northeast of the Old City of Shanghai at Huangpu District. This beautifully preserved classical Chinese garden dates back to the Ming Dynasty. Wander through the intricate pavilions, rockeries, and tranquil ponds. It’s a peaceful retreat from the bustling city.
Shanghai Tower 上海中心大厦
Head to the observation deck of Shanghai Tower for incredible panoramic views of the city. The observatory sits on 545 meters high on the 118th floor. Shanghai Tower is the tallest building in China and the third tallest in the world. It’s best to pre-book tickets online so you can skip the queue. Don’t go if you’re afraid of heights!

GETTING AROUND Shanghai
Shanghai Metro
The Shanghai Metro is one of the world's largest and most efficient subway systems. It's the fastest and most convenient way to navigate the city, with English signage and announcements everywhere.
Didi & taxis
Ride-hailing apps like Didi are easy to use and have an English interface. You can hail a Didi from within the Alipay app. Taxis are plentiful in Shanghai, but it's helpful to have your destination written in Chinese.
Walking and cycling
Place like the French Concession and the Bund are best explored on foot. For longer distances, consider using the city's bike-sharing system.
